The resurrection is the baseline between the two covenants. Those who are looking forward to the resurrection, are in the old Covenant, while those who’ve received the resurrection are in the New Covenant. Then there are those who flounder.
This is the reason Christ went to the cross and paid for the sin of all of humanity. He is our cross over from death to life. He is the event all the old covenant anticipated.
We know this because in Paul’s final testimony to King Agrippa of the gentiles he said that ” 7 To this promise our twelve tribes, earnestly serving God night and day, hope to attain” being “life from the dead. Showing that it was available for those who pressed in, in their day.
However, the testimony of Jesus Christ was, I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in me shall never die“, showing for us the phase passed the resurrection is faith in Him.
It is because Christ went to the cross and took our curse from us and took our death for us to walk in a new sinless life. That we have come to know and believe that what is required from us is done by God (John 3. 18)
Isn’t that what we vowed at our baptism? To be buried in his likeness and raised in newness of life?
So like we say the demarcation line between the old Covenant and the New Covenant is the resurrection emphatically.
If we can understand this basic concept, and appropriate it to the various Epistles, we can better understand that the disciples and all scripture is progressive. Yes all things are true, but not all the time to everybody. If it was then Jesus would not have said “if you can believe it” and “if you can receive it”. And “let it be according to your faith”.
While one is learning justification, redemption, reconning and other legal jargon freeing you from sin to receive a new life like taught in the book of Romans. Others are reaching to the Kingdom, the ascention, the new body and anything but a second coming. These are all reaching out to lay hold of why Christ laid hold of them/you. The second coming seekers are sidelined in limbo waiting for the next saving, which comes “with all lying signs and wonders to deceive those who reject the complete saving at the cross, payment rendered in full.
The resurrection is the baseline between the two covenants. Those who are looking forward to the resurrection, are in the old Covenant, while those who are in the resurrection are in the new. Just barely. Now you are in the vortex between the resurrection and the Kingdom for which you are called to the ascention. Your climb up.
The Kingdom of God is at hand.
